Tertiary Compounds are basically ionic compounds. ï»¿Tertiary compounds are made of 3 elements, one’s metal, and the other two are non-metals bonded together. They are very simple and you do not have to memorize any prefixes or any formula. You simply name it as you see it. You are allowed to use a special chart with special elements that are not found in the Periodic Table called the Polyatomic Ion Chart.

To name Tertiary Compounds:

To name tertiary compounds name the metal and complex ion. Include the name of the elements or compounds, which can be found on the polyatomic ion sheet.  If it is a transition metal, include the roman numeral next to the name.

Examples:

KOH-------------->Potassium Hydroxide

1. Write the name for each element. Some might be on the periodic table and others will be in the polyatomic ion chart. Potassium Hydroxide

2. Thats all you have to do. Just name the element as you see it without worrying about charges unless it is a transition metal..

Example 2:  Pd(CN)2  (more than one polyatomic ion)

1. Write the name of every element but leave a space after the first name. EX: Palladium (___) Bromate

2.  The number that goes in the blank is the number (in roman numerals) of ions after the formula. EX: Palladium (II) CyanideAnd that's all.

Other examples:

3. Al(BRO3)3------> Aluminum Bromate

4. NaCLO--------> Sodium Hypochlorite

5. NaMn04-------->Sodium Permanganate
