All chemical reactions can be placed into one of six categories.
Types of Reactions
1. Synthesis Reaction

-2 or more substances react to form a single substance

Al + O2 ----> Al2O3

2. Decomposition Reaction

- A single compound is broken down into 2 or more simpler products

HgO ---> Hg + O2
3. Single Replacement Reaction

-Atoms of an element replace the atoms of a second element in a compound

Ex: Zn + H2SO4 ----> ZnSO4 + H2

5. Combustion Reaction

O2 Reacts with another substance often producing energy in the form of heat and light. Produces H2O and CO2

2C6H6 + 15O2 ---> 12CO2 + 6H2O
4. Double Replacement Reaction
-Involves the exchange of positive ions between 2 compounds

NaOH + H2SO4 ---> Na2SO4 + 2H2O
